Sony's E3 2008 Media Press Conference

Sony's press conference beat the competition over the head with PlayStation 3's superior hardware, but attempted to show the company's focus was now on software. Sony patted itself on the back for winning the blue-ray HD format war and proclaimed that 2008 would be "the year of the PlayStation 3." At its conference, Sony looked at Resistance 2, announced vast improvements to its online network, continued support for PS2 & PSP and a much needed price drop for the 80 GB PS3.

I can't believe they're putting 130 new titles on the ps2. If they would do that with the ps3 maybe they would get some sold.

Sony uses the ten year plan. PlayStation 2 is in year 9 and will probably be development discontinued next year or the year after. I agree though, having two platforms out in the market at the same time can only hurt the sales of the other. If PS2 was discontinued, it would force migration to the PlayStation 3.

LittleBig Planet and Resistance 2 are probably the ONLY two games that can keep the PS3 alive for another 2 years.

I'm sure that coincides with Sony's 10 year plan. But as noted by industry members, it is at this part of the product's life cycle that Sony should be seeing profits. Instead, they have lost $3.2 billion on the PlayStation 3. That is nothing compared to Microsoft's $7 billion loss between Xbox & Xbox 360. Both companies are sinking in quite a bit of cash to come out on top.
